Thanks to Anchored Orthodontics, people with teeth alignment concerns can have a beautiful and functional smile they can be proud to show off! A smile you are happy with can make a significant difference in someone’s self-confidence and willingness to move forward with opportunities in life. There are different orthodontic treatments that can be used to address a wide range of orthodontic issues. Below are the most common orthodontic treatments and how to maintain good oral hygiene while using them.

Popular orthodontic treatments

Traditional metal braces

Traditional braces are the most common treatment in orthodontics, and the most tried and true method to address most orthodontic concerns. Metal braces have been used for over a century and remain one of the most effective ways to straighten teeth.

Traditional braces use metal brackets and wires to apply pressure on the patient's teeth, pushing them into a better alignment. A bracket is placed on each tooth, and the metal wires connect each adjacent bracket. As treatment progresses, Dr. McMahon will advance the size, shape, and material of the wire to achieve your customized smile goals.

Traditional braces are normally worn for a period of 12 to 24 months, depending on each patient’s needs. Despite the effectiveness of traditional braces, some people prefer more incognito options such as clear brackets or clear aligners. Oral hygiene is very important with metal braces, as it is for anyone with or without any orthodontic appliances in their mouth.

A more discreet option than traditional metal braces is clear braces. These work the same way as metal braces, but are generally harder to detect.

Clear aligners

Clear aligners can be a great alternative to metal braces for patients who may be seeking a more discreet option. Clear aligners generally work the same way as metal braces - applying constant pressure on the patient's teeth, slowly pushing them into the desired position. Just like the name implies, clear aligners are made from clear plastics that are virtually undetectable while being worn. This allows patients to deal with alignment issues without altering their appearance. Please note that Dr. McMahon uses Invisalign aligners; while some general dentists may offer Invisalign services, note that they often use knock-off aligner brands, and did not complete the necessary training to become a board-certified orthodontist. Dr. McMahon works closely with technicians at Invisalign to customize each patient’s desired needs and goals including the final position of each tooth, bite correction, and staging of treatment.

When straightening teeth with clear aligners, patients receive a series of trays, each worn for one week. As a patient advances through their treatment, one tray at a time, their teeth slowly move closer to their desired position. Clear aligners can be easily removed and reinserted, so the patient can easily take them out to eat or to clean their mouth. We recommend that patients brush their teeth after each meal, but if that is not possible, at least a thorough mouth washing before returning the trays to their mouth.

Conclusion

Orthodontics can address a wide array of issues, including basic concerns such as straightening teeth and fixing crowding, as well as more complex issues such as bite issues, airway concerns, and unfavorable growth and development patterns. While oral hygiene is always important, it is even more important to focus on during active orthodontic treatment.
